GORDON BOK IN CONCERT REVIEWS

From The Boston Globe: "The music of Maine folk singer Bok is like a universe unto itself, a roughhewn land filled with hardscrabble people, rascals in high places, and a natural world that is both cruel and kind, deadly and nurturing." Read this review and more...

News From Carol:

February 2010 -
Recently we were invited to attend the Portland Symphony Orchestra performance of Headcase by Brett William Dietz. Following a stroke at the age of 29 in 2002, he composed this piece over the following year as part of his recovery process. Scored for a seven piece ensemble including vocalist, it includes projections of MRI scans and images of his attempts to write from his hospital bed after losing his ability to speak, read and write.
We participated in related events at Maine Medical Center and New England Rehabilitation Hospital where there were opportunities to hear more of Brett’s story and to meet other stroke and brain injury survivors. Artwork created during their recoveries was on display. The plasticity of the brain along with the human spirit can produce remarkable results.
Out of this experience came ideas to contribute to a local stroke recovery program that is being developed. To find out more about this, go to lilypondaquatic.com.
So many avenues to follow on this path to recovery… For me, e-mail updates to family and friends in the first two years following my stroke and keeping a journal out of which has come several poems, have helped me sort out feelings along the way. Here’s one called Jigsaw Puzzle.

                    Jigsaw Puzzle
On the table in front of me I see
                A jigsaw puzzle box
The ful-color picture on the top is me
Walking through a sunny, grassy, flowery field.

I open the box, dump it on the table
One thing - when I turn them over
                All the pieces are white.

As the days go by, faded colors rise
To the surface of some pieces, one by one

                I rest and breathe,
                Wait and sing,
                Laugh, love and cry
                Hope and try
                  and be here now.
