Gordon Bok Woodcarvings

"I grew up around a shipyard, and have a long fascination with the shapes of
working vessels and the myriad moving shapes of water.
For me, carving one way of remembering a way of life that is disappearing.
Many images are from memories of working on boats or fishing along the coast,
and most of the figures in my carvings are people I have known."

Growing up among the woodcarvers, joiners and machinists of a coastal shipyard, Gordon has been a woodworker and carver throughout his life. After inheriting his mother's tools over thirty years ago, many of which are still used to this day, Gordon began to focus more on his woodcarvings.

He carves from his personal experience; many tell a story while others celebrate the old working boats indigenous to the East coast. Wood from around the world is brought as a gift to the artist to carve. Images of wind, water, music and a life at sea are richly sculpted into mahogany, butternut, pine, and cedar.
